Grass Valley Captures Technical Achievement Award from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Viper FilmStream Camera

On February 11, 2017 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honoured 18 scientific and technical achievements represented by 34 individual award recipients, as well as five organizations at its annual Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation.
“This year we are particularly pleased to be able to honour not only a wide range of new technologies, but also the pioneering digital cinema cameras that helped facilitate the widespread conversion to electronic image capture for motion picture production,” said Ray Feeney, Academy Award® recipient and chair of the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee. “With their outstanding, innovative work, these technologists, engineers and inventors have significantly expanded film makers’ creative choices for moving image storytelling.”
On the very top of the list among The Academy Awards for scientific and technical achievements, the Technical Achievement Awards (Academy Certificate) is awarded to Thomson Grass Valley for the design and engineering of the pioneering Viper FilmStream digital camera system. First introduced by Grass Valley in 2002, the Viper FilmStream Camera represents a significant milestone in the industry as the first production model digital cinematography camera that most closely emulated a traditional film workflow, providing the highest quality digital images at the time. "The Viper FilmStream Camera was the first camera to use raw digital images directly from the sensor without any processing," said Marco Lopez, president, Grass Valley.
