Hannu Digital introduces DVB-T in Latvia

On September 20, 2007 Hannu Digital, a Hannu Pro company, took the next step towards the introduction of digital TV broadcasts in Latvia - six 5kW DVB-T Thomson/Thales transmitters started broadcasting digital signals with sufficient power to cover Riga city and the surrounding area. Each of the six recently installed transmitters is capable of delivering total data rates up to 25-31 Mbps, providing as many as five TV channels at 4 Mbps in MPEG-2 or up to 10 TV channels at 2 Mbps in MPEG-4 format, together with a maximum of seven digital radio programmes and associated service information. In addition to the transmitters, a Teleste head-end was also installed, providing support for up to 150 TV channels in MPEG-2 format. All installed systems support DVB-H as well.
The main advantages that flow on from the introduction of digital broadcasting are:
· optimal use of broadcast frequencies, which is imperative with the increase in the number of transmission devices and application spectrum consumption
· efficient use of electric energy - the power consumption of a 5kW transmitter capable of delivering 5-6 TV channels and 7 radio programmes reaches just 25kW, but the power consumption of an equivalent 20kW analogue transmitter, capable of delivering only a single TV channel, reaches 40kW
· digital TV programmes can be readily accessed with mobile receivers, for instance, in public transport etc.
· all installed transmitters can also provide the next level DVB-H mobile TV broadcasts
· the reception of digital terrestrial TV, with an appropriate receiver, is as easy as with analogue, but digital technology can effortlessly provide public free-to-air broadcasts as well as encoded pay-tv signals.
